EPA: Maintain Critical PFAS Protections!

Trump’s EPA has released proposals to gut PFAS protections, essentially telling the public to drink poison. PFAS leach into our food, water, ecosystems, and even our bodies, causing numerous health issues, including low birth weight, cancer, and other harmful illnesses.

Now, important PFAS protections are under attack with two proposed rules from Trump’s EPA: one proposal would eliminate limits on four PFAS (including GenX) in drinking water, and one proposal that would allow water systems to delay compliance with the limits for two other PFAS (PFOS and PFOA).

I strongly oppose this proposed rule to rescind drinking water protections against toxic PFAS.

Toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” don’t readily break down on their own in the environment. They leach into our food, water, ecosystems, and even our bodies, causing numerous health issues, including low birth weight, cancer, and other harmful illnesses.

And now, EPA is putting a critical PFAS protection under attack by proposing a rule to outright eliminate the limits related to four PFAS in drinking water: PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (known as GenX), and PFBS.

EPA must not delay or roll back these hard-won limits on toxic PFAS contaminants in drinking water. It must immediately:

- Cease this deregulatory action
- Stop approving new PFAS chemicals
- Ban all non-essential uses of PFAS 
- Hold polluters accountable for PFAS cleanup
- Expand protections to regulate the entire class of PFAS 
- Amp up support to ensure that every community has access to safe, affordable water

For decades, communities have been sounding the alarm and demanding action on these toxic forever chemicals. Every person deserves and needs clean, safe water, and this recent proposed rule threatens millions of people.

I urge you to withdraw this proposed rule.  The damage caused by PFAS in our water is preventable. The EPA must protect communities from these toxic substances in our water, not roll back important progress we’ve made toward safe water for our families.
