Stop the Constitution Pipeline!

The Constitution Pipeline, a proposal to bring fracked gas from Pennsylvania to New York, was rejected by New York State way back in 2016. The decision to deny the pipeline, and its ultimate defeat, has not only protected New York’s water, air, and climate, but also been a crucial piece of the state’s commitment to end our reliance on fossil fuels.

Now the company behind the pipeline, Williams Company, wants to bring the proposal back from the dead by cutting corners and bypassing New York State’s approval.

We're fighting these attempts — but in the meantime, we need to flood the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) with thousands of comments showing our opposition to the pipeline and the negative impacts it will have on our environment and our communities.

The pipeline would be devastating to New York’s waterways and forests, and it would keep us hooked on expensive and polluting fossil fuels. It must be defeated again.

The Williams Constitution Pipeline Project and the related Wright Interconnect Project (docket numbers CP13-499-006 and CP13-502-003) pose serious threats to New York’s communities and environment. In New York alone, the pipeline would cut a 100-foot-wide swath through four counties, crossing and endangering waterways 251 times, and stripping the area of thousands of acres of trees. Back in 2016, New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation correctly concluded that the pipeline company failed to ensure it could comply with the state’s water quality standards and therefore denied a permit necessary for the pipeline project. The project was ultimately defeated.

FERC should reject the attempt to resurrect the Constitution Pipeline Project and the related Wright Interconnect Project.

If FERC allows this process to move forward, it must require a new comprehensive environmental analysis for the projects that addresses all of the negative environmental impacts – those that were raised years ago and those raised now.

The Constitution Pipeline would carry fracked gas from Susquehanna County of Pennsylvania to the Southern Tier of New York, and ultimately to the Capitol Region of New York. The pipeline would be 124 miles long, clearcutting forests and crossing waterways hundreds of times. The related Wright Interconnect Project would expand a compressor station in Schoharie County, New York. Compressor stations emit toxic pollutants that cause a litany of health issues and are extremely loud and disruptive to people and wildlife who live nearby.

The Constitution Pipeline and the Wright Interconnect Projects will have significant negative impacts on the environment and communities and should be rejected.
