Congress: No more pesticides making us sick!

Pesticide giants want to avoid liability for the harm caused by their products.

Chemicals like glyphosate, the key ingredient in Roundup and a probable human carcinogen, have no place near our food or waterways – and when they make us sick, the companies behind these dangerous chemicals need to be held accountable.

The good news is that there’s a bipartisan bill in Congress that would affirm our right to stand up to pesticide polluters.

I urge you to support the No Immunity for Glyphosate Act (HR 7601), to reverse Trump’s Executive Order that expands production of this chemical while granting liability protections to manufacturers.

Trump’s Executive Order is intended to prop up Bayer-Monsanto just as the multibillion-dollar corporation was finally being held to account for health harms attributed to glyphosate..

By 2022, Bayer-Monsanto had settled over 100,000 Roundup lawsuits, paying out about $11 billion in damages. These lawsuits have been brought by people, including farmers, who are suffering from cancer and other harms linked to Roundup. In response, Bayer-Monsanto lobbied heavily for the passage of Cancer Gag Acts that would immunize pesticide corporations from one of the only successful pathways for cancer patients to be compensated. But these legal actions are far from “frivolous,” and to imply that they are is a gross distortion of justice.

EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs relies on chemical corporations to conduct and submit data from pesticide studies – akin to the fox guarding the henhouse. There are many documented cases of such companies hiding negative data and funding research that makes their products look safer. Until this broken system is fixed, the courts are the best tool we have to protect ourselves and hold pesticide corporations accountable.

Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the United States. Granting the industry immunity now would be a mistake that would rob us of our future options for recourse when we find sufficient evidence to allege that these products are making us sick.

I urge you to put the health of our communities above pesticide company profits by supporting the No Immunity for Glyphosate Act (HR 7601).
