Protect Chaco Canyon from Oil & Gas Drilling

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking to reverse a 20-year ban on oil and gas drilling around Chaco Culture National Historical Park.

They also only allowed for TWO WEEKS of public input on this awful plan! We have until July 29 to submit public comments.

I urge you to protect the Chaco Cultural National Historic Park from leasing for oil and gas drilling, and ask that you take the no action alternative on Public Land Order (PLO) No. 7923, and maintain the 10-mile mineral withdrawal zone.

Years of widespread efforts to protect sacred sites, cultural resources, and public health across the Greater Chaco landscape have persisted, and a long-term solution is needed to protect the health and cultural sites of New Mexico’s Chaco community, NOT a rollback of the limited protections that are currently in place.

The oil and gas industry must be held accountable for the impacts of over 40,000 existing oil and gas wells in the region, as well as its legacy of pollution – including abandoned, orphaned, and non-producing wells that need to be addressed and fully remediated.

Until the Trump administration cuts Big Oil’s stranglehold on our energy future, New Mexico will serve as one more reminder of serious failure to protect the country’s climate and communities from profiteering corporations – especially if this buffer zone is removed.

I urge the BLM to extend the public comment period for Chaco Canyon. You must NOT reverse what few critical protections are in place to protect this important landscape.
