Pennsylvania House: Protect Affordable Water!

Water bills in Pennsylvania are skyrocketing as corporations like Aqua PA and Pennsylvania American Water are taking over public water and sewer authorities.

The Public Water Protection and Fair Utility Transition Act (HB 1964) would put a pause on that to help make water bills more affordable for Pennsylvania families.

A decade ago, Pennsylvania passed Act 12 legislation that allows predatory water system pricing, giving corporations like Aqua Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania American Water free rein to acquire municipal water and sewer systems and hike water and sewer bills. It’s been a disaster for Pennsylvanians and should be repealed.

Enough is enough. It’s time to repeal this terrible law to protect households and local businesses from excessive water rate hikes.

The main impact of Act 12 has been to increase the profits of the water companies and tempt elected officials, leaving residents and businesses with hugely inflated water and sewer bills. It allows these corporations to aggressively seek to buy municipal systems and pay top dollar for them. Sale negotiations with public officials take place behind closed doors, denying residents a chance to be heard, and non-disclosure agreements are being signed to keep information about potential sales hidden from the public.

With water and sewer bills now skyrocketing, people are pushing back hard — but we shouldn't have to fight so hard. We need legislation that puts Pennsylvanians first, not corporate lobbyists.

I urge you to co-sponsor Rep. Danilo Burgos’s HB 1964 now and vote YES on when it comes to the house floor. Please protect Pennsylvanians from unjust water and sewer rate hikes.
