Officials around the state are proposing key legislative reforms that would lower electricity bills for Florida families by changing how utility regulators approve rate hikes. They're also hoping to enact key protections to hold these utilities accountable.

Florida families are struggling under the weight of skyrocketing electricity bills. The Public Service Commission (PSC) has become a rubberstamp for rate hikes, year-after-year. That’s why we need legislators like you to ensure affordable energy reforms that will protect our Florida families.

State officials are proposing a series PSC reforms that would help lower electricity bills by:
 
- Insulating consumers from high fuel cost fluctuations by requiring that electric utilities assume partial responsibility for the cost. Under current practice, ratepayers bear the full brunt of fuel price spikes and utilities are not incentivized to save on expensive gas and fuel costs.

- Reining in utility profiteering that leads to higher rates by capping return on equity (ROE) to national averages and tying ROE to utility performance benchmarks around energy efficiency and less expensive clean energy options. Under current practice, Florida utilities have been raking in some of the nation’s highest returns on equity and profits.

- Increasing transparency and public accountability from both the PSC and the utilities it regulates by requiring proportional in-person, in-district hearings whenever a utility requests a rate hike, and requiring that electricity bill payments cannot be used for utility executive bonuses and political campaign contributions
