Utility Relief Act Shouldn't Favor Gas, Nuclear, or Data Centers!

Governor Moore has openly stated plans to promote new methane gas and nuclear power plants, mostly as a way to power new AI data centers in the state.

A new massive energy bill called the Utility Relief Act would allow his administration to identify 50 new locations to build new "energy stations," implement new pro-data center regulations, roll back key pollution standards for Maryland’s gas power plants, and give financial incentives for new nuclear reactors.

Urge your state legislators to ensure that the Utility Relief Act protects Maryland families and environment by removing any policies in the bill that favor gas plants, nuclear reactors, and large data centers.

As your constituent, I urge you to remove provisions in the Utility Relief Act (HB 1532) that promote the buildout of more methane gas and nuclear plants in Maryland, meant to favor new data centers in our state, as I believe these all would ultimately lead to higher energy costs and pollute our environment.

The Utility Relief Act is a massive energy package that was introduced by Governor Moore and other state leaders very late in session without time for scrutiny or accountability.

Although it is touted as a way to lower energy bills, I am concerned by provisions that would require a study of 50 new sites for new power plants, give financial incentives for the buildout of new nuclear reactors in the state, roll back key pollution standards for gas plants, and facilitate new data centers in our state. I know that the nearly 150-page bill touches on a lot of different areas, but these bad provisions are of great concern to me.

We know that one of the main reasons that energy bills have been going up is related to the costs of building out the infrastructure needed to power data centers in our region in places like Virginia. That's why promoting new power plants and data centers in Maryland in the Utility Relief Act is counter to the goal of lowering electricity bills. Allowing those provisions to remain in the bill as written would only exacerbate the problem.

My hope is that you continue supporting clean, renewable energy development in the state that will truly help Maryland families, not dirty energy projects and subsidies meant to help Big Tech executives. Please work to make sure the Utility Relief Act legislation is not passed without closely analyzing who stands to benefit and who stands to lose, and make the appropriate changes to ensure your constituents are truly protected.

Again, I urge you to reject any provisions in the Utility Relief Act that would promote more costly, dirty methane gas plants, nuclear reactors, and AI data centers in our state.
