Protect New York's Climate Law!

With multiple reports that Governor Hochul intends to gut New York’s climate law through the state budget process, we need our legislature to stand up to her.

Right now, the state is failing to hit its emissions reductions goals. While we all struggle with the impacts of climate change, dirty air, and sky-high utility bills driven by the expansion of fossil fuels, Governor Hochul’s response is to move the goal posts, weaken the law, and essentially use an accounting trick to make it appear like we’re making progress.

We can’t let that happen.

And with enough pressure, this is a fight we can win.

It's time to flood our state legislators with messages opposing this cynical attack on our climate law.

With reports that Governor Hochul is almost certain to use the budget process to once again attack New York’s landmark climate law (the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act – CLCPA), I urge you to reject any attempt to weaken the law. I’m particularly concerned the Hochul administration will once again attempt to change the way the state calculates methane emissions.

Not only is changing the way we count emissions a transparent attempt to move the goal posts at a time when the state is woefully behind on the climate goals enshrined into law in the CLCPA, it will also have real impacts for New Yorkers.  If we change the law to undercount methane emissions, the result is predictable and devastating: more dirty fracked gas power plants, more pipelines crisscrossing the state, dirtier air for New Yorkers, and higher utility bills to pay for the rapid expansion of fossil fuels.

We can’t let that happen. New York passed a strong climate law. The response to being behind on the goals we set can’t be to move the goal posts. We must instead redouble our efforts to move off fossil fuels.

I urge you to reject any attempt to gut the climate law in the upcoming budget and to communicate your opposition to leadership now.
