No Data Center in New Brunswick!

After failing to deliver on promises for new housing and a park that would be open to the public, a private developer wants the New Brunswick City Council to approve changes to the Jersey-Sandford Redevelopment Plan that would allow for a 27,000-square-foot data center along the Mile Run Brook.

Data centers create noise, pollute our environment, and use tremendous amounts of water and electricity. Building one here would make the new neighborhood much less desirable — and would drive up utility bills for residents.

Tell City Council: New Brunswick residents deserve green spaces, not polluting data centers!

I urge you to vote NO on the revised Jersey-Sanford Redevelopment Plan that would open the door for a massive data center in our city.

Redevelopment plans can bring about developments that makes a city stronger and more affordable — or they can help fast-track developments that drain a city’s resources, harm its residents, drive up the costs of electricity, and waste precious water resources. Unfortunately, the proposed revisions would do the latter.

The proposed revisions would not only make it possible for the site’s developer to build a data center along the Mile Run Brook, but would incentivize this kind of harmful land use. Comments made at the Planning Board hearing on this matter strongly suggest that a specific developer has already been selected, that they have plans for a 27,000-square-foot data center, and that they are abandoning the original proposal to construct a park for use by the public.

Data centers like the one contemplated for Jersey Avenue can use millions of gallons of water, and more electricity than almost any other kind of development. It’s offensive that this data center would be paired with a new housing development. Once completed, data centers employ remarkably few people, all while emitting pollution into the air and water and creating noise that harms nearby residents. They use huge amounts of water and electricity, increasing costs for residents and small businesses.

With so little information about the impacts of this kind of land use on the City of New Brunswick, it would be irresponsible to approve the revised redevelopment plans.

Please vote NO to ordinance O-022604 to prevent a data center from harming New Brunswick and its residents.
