Protect Rahway’s Public Water System!

Rahway City Council is making moves to sell the city's water utility to a private corporation. If this moves forward, residents of Rahway will be saddled with skyrocketing rates, decreased quality of service, and a loss of transparency and accountability over a service essential for public health.

Urge the Mayor and City Council to reverse course and oppose any effort to sell Rahway’s water system!

After taking over a public system, corporate water utilities typically increase rates in order to recoup their purchase price and make a profit. They cut corners on customer service and often rely on out-of-state call centers — which leaves residents struggling with slow responses to their service requests and difficulties resolving billing errors.

City Council recently voted to request proposals from private water companies, but it's not to late to save Rahway's public water!

I oppose the sale of Rahway’s water system to a for-profit corporation. Water privatization frequently leads to ratepayers paying more and getting less, with higher rates and worse customer service. A system sale would be a disaster for residents and local businesses, further exacerbating the affordability crisis.

After taking over a public system, water companies typically seek to increase rates to recoup the purchase price and make a profit. Private companies also cut corners on customer service and often rely on out-of-state call centers. As a result, many customers of private systems have reported slow responses to their service requests and difficulties resolving billing errors.

I am concerned that privatization would lead to skyrocketing rates, decreased quality of service, and a loss of transparency and accountability over a service essential for public health. Large water corporations are beholden first and foremost to their shareholders, and have frequently failed to keep promises to elected officials and to the public, particularly regarding rate freezes. Private companies will put their profits ahead of our needs.

Please publicly and vocally oppose any effort to sell the City of Rahway’s water system!
