Gov. Newsom: Keep Your Promise and Shut Aliso Down!

In the early morning of January 27, 2026, community members in the north San Fernando Valley heard a loud noise and strong smell of gas coming from SoCalGas’ Aliso Canyon gas storage facility – the site of the largest gas blowout in U.S. history just over a decade ago.

It’s now been more than 10 years since the Aliso Canyon blowout and communities are still facing the dangers of having this facility in their backyards.

Governor Newsom and his appointees at the California Public Utilities Commission have buried their heads in the sand while this facility continues to put those who live near it at serious health risk. From the 2015 blowout to this recent gas leak, it’s clear that Aliso Canyon remains a threat to public health and safety.

Over a decade since the worst gas blowout in U.S. history, SoCalGas’ Aliso Canyon gas storage facility remains operational, with storage limits increased three times up to full capacity over the course of your tenure as governor. This facility remains a threat to public health and safety, as evident by the facility's recent gas leak on January 27, 2026.

During your first gubernatorial campaign, you committed to shutting down Aliso Canyon, and in November 2019, you instructed the California Public Utilities Commission to expedite the planning process for its closure. However, the use of Aliso Canyon has increased by 3,000% compared to the last two years of Governor Brown’s administration, as a direct result of the Public Utilities Commission's decision to weaken the withdrawal regulations, allowing SoCalGas to operate Aliso Canyon at their discretion.

The Public Utilities Commission's Energy Division released their Aliso Canyon Biennial Assessment Report, which recommends a 10 Bcf reduction in storage capacity at Aliso Canyon. But we know this does not truly do justice to communities still reeling from the 2015 blowout. Community experts, engineers, and environmental groups have shown that it is feasible to shut down Aliso Canyon without compromising energy reliability. The facility was offline for two years after the blowout, during which time there were no blackouts or gas supply shortages in the region.

The community cannot continue to bear the burden of the Aliso Conyon facility. We need decisive action to prevent future disasters and protect public health. Please propose a shutdown timeline for Aliso Canyon and to lead California towards a cleaner and safer energy future.
