Governor Hochul keeps promoting dirty energy even as the climate crisis advances, so we need the State Senate to take the lead. The New York Senate is often the first to take bold visionary stances on environmental issues — acting as a counterweight when the governor and Assembly leadership are failing to meet the moment.

This year, we need them to support Bucks for Boilers, legislation to help New Yorkers across the state with the upfront costs of upgrading their homes from dirty oil and gas boilers to energy-efficient heat pumps, so that energy bills will be lower and our air will be cleaner.

I urge you to support putting Bucks for Boilers in the Senate one-house budget.

Despite progress made to ban gas in NEW homes and buildings, existing homes and buildings keep the dirty energy flowing and homeowners are continuing to purchase new oil and gas boilers with 20-30 year lifespans.

The decision to continue to heat one’s home with dirty fossil fuels is often hardly a choice at all. For the majority of New Yorkers, the cost to make the transition to clean energy is simply too steep. The upfront costs are astronomical for low- to middle-income New Yorkers, placing an unfair burden on the majority of working New Yorkers.

The solution is a comprehensive program designed to financially support individual homeowners with transitioning their homes to all-electric. The Bucks for Boilers Act mandates that all homes and buildings be fully transitioned off of gas and oil once the homeowners’ dirty boiler dies. The scale of resources is tied to income and need.

Buildings are the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in New York. We need public money going back to homeowners.

The $4.5 billion per year cost is an investment in all of our futures, for our wallets and for our climate. The upfront costs of upgrading our homes will make it so that, in the long run, our energy bills will be lower and our air will be cleaner.
