Congress: AI Must Be Regulated!

The Trump administration is pushing dangerous provisions that would allow Big Tech to expand its AI data centers, overriding local and state regulations that protect communities.

Data centers pose significant health and safety risks to nearby communities, and rely on fossil fuels such as coal, the largest contributor to climate change. Local governments and communities need to continue to have a say on what’s built in their own backyard.

Tell Congress: REJECT efforts to steamroll local regulations to promote unchecked AI data center expansion.

I urge you to reject any measure that would override local, state, and federal regulations related to AI data center expansion.

Any waiver or moratorium on state and federal regulatory authority would be a sweeping concession to large technology corporations at the expense of addressing the climate crisis, environmental justice, and protection, as well as public health, workers’ rights, and children’s safety, all while raising energy prices and threatening the stability of the electric grid.

At a time of rapid growth in the AI industry and rising public concern about AI data centers, it would be extraordinarily irresponsible to preempt state and federal regulatory authority and allow the industry to grow unchecked — community safety and health are at stake.

Unchecked AI growth is fueling a surge in energy-hungry data centers that:

- Drive up fossil fuel consumption, leading to decades of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions – training a large AI model can generate over 626,000 pounds of CO2, more than five times a car’s lifetime emissions 
- Use enormous volumes of water for cooling, which threatens local supplies and exacerbates droughts in regions such as Arizona and Nevada
- Cause habitat loss and biodiversity threats due to land and resource demand for data infrastructure
- Exposes nearby communities to air and water pollution linked to respiratory problems and cancer risk
- Strain local electrical grids, leading to more frequent outages and higher energy prices nationwide.

I urge you to oppose any policy that would erode or preempt federal or state regulation of the AI industry, including data centers.
