No Dirty Energy in Hochul’s State Energy Plan!

Governor Hochul released a draft energy plan, and it's riddled with dirty energy proposals and inadequacies.

Governor Hochul’s energy agenda includes new fracked gas pipelines, new nuclear power plants, industrialization of Indigenous Nations’ lands, a slowdown of the state’s emission reduction timeline, and not nearly enough renewables or funding to move buildings off fossil fuels.

Deadline Monday, October 6th: Submit a public comment telling Governor Hochul and her administration to reject dirty energy and embrace a renewable energy agenda that centers Environmental Justice!

Governor Hochul and NYSERDA must revise the draft energy plan to move New York off fossil fuels as rapidly as possible.

That means denying permits for new fossil fuel infrastructure development in New York, including:
 - the Williams NESE pipeline that would be built off the coast of New York City
 - the Williams Constitution pipeline that would run through the Southern Tier and Catskills Region
 - the expansion of the Enbridge Algonquin pipeline that runs through Rockland, Westchester and Putnam counties

Over 11,000 comments opposing the expansion of the Williams NESE pipeline were submitted to the Department of Environmental Conservation. New Yorkers have made it clear we do not want more fracked gas pipelines.

Governor Hochul must rapidly scale up New York’s wind, solar, battery storage, and renewable energy transmission line development. New York must work to meet the CLCPA targets, not slow down the benchmarks. New York has the solutions and can meet all our energy needs using 100% renewable energy.

The Draft Energy Plan should also include far more funding and a framework to help move buildings – New York’s top source of greenhouse gas emissions – off fossil fuels and electrify them instead. Governor Hochul must sign the legislation to repeal the 100-foot rule gas subsidy that ratepayers are forced to pay.

Additionally, the governor’s nuclear plan is not a climate solution. New nuclear power plants are the most expensive form of energy and far more expensive than renewables. They also are far too slow to build to actually reduce greenhouse gas emissions during the timeframe our planet has left to curb the climate crisis and avoid climate tipping points.

New Yorkers' utility bills would increase to cover the astronomical cost of building and operating nuclear plants. Nuclear also is dangerous, and there is no safe way to dispose of the radioactive waste. It often ends up in waterways and disproportionately impacts Indigenous and Black and brown communities.

The state must commit to environmental justice and stop putting fossil fuel infrastructure in areas that are already burdened by air and water pollution. The health impacts of fossil fuel infrastructure hit Black, brown, Indigenous, and poor communities hardest.

Governor Hochul’s draft energy plan is filled with dirty energy proposals and must be redone to center Environmental Justice and build the renewable future we need.
