Newsom: Climate Leaders Don’t Back Big Oil!

California Governor Gavin Newsom wants to be lauded as a climate champion, but he's spent the past year caving to Big Oil demands.

  • He broke his promise to communities by keeping the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility open ten years after the worst blowout in U.S. history.
  • He publicly championed fossil fuel industry-backed schemes like carbon capture and storage (CCS) and hydrogen that can worsen climate impacts, increase costs for consumers and ratepayers, and extend the life of polluting projects.
  • He granted waivers and exemptions to restart offshore drilling off the coast of Santa Barbara – the site of 2015’s infamous oil spill disaster.
  • And he spearheaded legislation that will streamline permitting for new oil and gas wells in some of the most polluted parts of the state.

Newsom claims to be the leader we need, but how can we trust him if he backs Big Oil over California communities?

Tell Governor Newsom: Real climate leaders don’t side with Big Oil. It’s time to hold industry accountable for the damage they cause in our communities and to our wallets, starting with the Make Polluters Pay Climate Superfund.
