I urge you to support Public Service Commission (PSC) reform legislation, which will make energy more affordable and reliable.

Last year, the Florida PSC approved the largest utility rate hike in US history — costs that will fall on the backs of the very people who rely on them to keep the lights on. Half of every dollar in this proposal goes straight to shareholder profits, not essential services. That’s unacceptable.

And this year, Tampa Electric is asking to raise rates again.

The cost of electricity has become unaffordable because the PSC rubber stamps every request that utilities make.

Let’s face it: The PSC is broken. We need you to fight for affordable, reliable energy and pass legislation to hold utilities and the PSC accountable.

Legislation could do the following:

-- Cap the return on equity that utilities can make.
-- Make utilities share responsibility for fuel cost spikes. Right now, all the risk falls on consumers.
-- Tie utility profits to performance — specifically, how well they meet energy efficiency and clean energy targets. 
-- Require a more balanced capital structure. Florida utilities are allowed to over-rely on equity, and bringing the debt-to-equity ratio in line with national norms would offer relief for Florida families.
-- Bring transparency to a system that currently operates in the shadows — with clearer reporting, more accessible hearings, and greater public accountability for both utilities and the PSC.

The Public Service Commission is charged with ensuring fair rates — not maximizing utility profits. I strongly urge you to support PSC reform legislation and send a clear message that Floridians come first. Thank you for your service and attention.
