No Big Oil Handouts at the Expense of Our Health!

Governor Newsom claims to be a climate leader who holds Big Oil accountable for its pollution and greed, but his office circulated draft bill language that would EXEMPT new wells in heavily polluted parts of the state from environmental review and public participation, silencing impacted communities.

This is the latest in a series of Big Oil handouts Newsom has given polluters.

He has embraced industry-backed false solutions like carbon capture and storage (CCS) and hydrogen that can WORSEN climate pollution and extend the life of fossil fuel projects.

He broke his promise to close the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility ten years after the largest blowout in U.S. history.

And even after the devastating, climate-driven LA fires, he has not yet endorsed the Make Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act, which would fund climate preparedness and recovery by making the largest emitters pay for the climate damages they caused.

Enough is enough. Tell Newsom: No more Big Oil handouts!

I was disappointed to learn that your office floated draft bill language that would exempt new oil and gas wells from CEQA and environmental review, and cut the voices of impacted communities out of the permitting process. Your proposal would worsen pollution in some of the most polluted parts of the state, like Kern County and areas near existing oil fields. And despite claims otherwise, this will do nothing to lower gas prices or stop refinery closures.

The price of gas at the pump is set by international crude prices, not production levels in California. Sacrificing our air, water, and health will only line industry pockets. Oil and gas operations in Kern County and across the state are highly energy intensive and produce some of the dirtiest oil in the world. As a result, production has been in decline for years. Your proposal will not reverse this trend, but it will risk our water, climate, and children’s lungs.

While you publicly claim to hold industry accountable, I am concerned that this is the latest in a pattern of fossil fuel handouts. You have expressed support for industry-backed false solutions like carbon capture and storage (CCS) and hydrogen that can worsen climate pollution and extend the life of polluting fossil fuel projects. You broke your promise to close the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility ten years after the largest blowout in U.S. history. And even after the devastating, climate-driven LA fires, you have not yet endorsed the Make Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act, which would fund climate preparedness and recovery by making the largest emitters pay for the climate damages they caused.

I urge you to hold firm against industry pressure and reject efforts to streamline oil and gas permitting. The air we breath, the water we drink, and the climate we all live in depends on it.
