No NESE Pipeline!

Our climate is under attack from Donald Trump and his plans to expand fracked gas pipelines in New York.

The Williams NESE pipeline is back after New Yorkers stopped it five years ago. The reason it was denied then is the same reason it must be denied now. It will increase the amount of greenhouse gases heating up our atmosphere, burdening communities that are already facing heat waves and a lack of cooling centers. It will contribute to sea level rise, worsen flooding, and cost us more in taxes to recover from climate events.

Building new fossil fuel infrastructure worsens the climate crisis and undermines New York State’s climate law, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.

In order to build this pipeline, Williams needs key permits from Governor Hochul's Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). But they've only given us until August 16th to submit public comments.

Please deny all permits for the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) project. Stopping the Williams NESE project is absolutely critical to our efforts to halt the rise in global temperatures and roll back the climate crisis. Our lives, the lives of our loved ones, and the future of this beautiful planet depend on it.

Sea levels have risen a full foot in New York City since 1900, and they're predicted to rise another 4 to 5 feet by 2100. Low-lying areas of south Brooklyn and Queens are areas most immediately vulnerable to flooding. Flooding from extreme weather events causes damage not only to homes and businesses, but critical infrastructure and facilities too. It falls on taxpayers to repair the damage from the aftermath of flooding and make infrastructure, such as the New York City subway system, flood-proof — and that drains city and state resources as floods become increasingly common.

New York is also experiencing more frequent and more intense heat waves as a result of the climate crisis. Heat waves are the leading cause of weather-related deaths nationally, with New York City now averaging around 500 heat-related deaths per year. Excessive heat also strains critical infrastructure, particularly the electric grid. Equipment like transformers and transmission wires become less efficient in extreme heat, leading to brownouts and blackouts.

The Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) requires New York to reduce economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions 40% by 2030 and no less than 85% by 2050 from 1990 levels. Further, it mandates that no less than 35% with a goal of at least 40% of our climate action benefits will go toward New York’s disadvantaged communities. To accelerate the climate impact on communities already overburdened with failing infrastructure, floods, and heat stress by expanding our greenhouse gas emissions is not only negligent, but an environmental injustice and a disregard of the mandates in our climate law.

The Williams NESE project, if built, would inject more fracked gas into an aging and leaking system that is not only raising our utility bills, but accelerating global warming and making New Yorkers’ life insufferable. Allowing it to go forward would be an unconscionable contribution to the disaster that is the climate crisis, and it would be completely inconsistent with New York’s climate law.

To fully understand the impact of this proposed pipeline on New Yorkers facing flood damage, heat waves, and threats of sea level rise, the DEC must also hold in-person and virtual public comment hearings on the project. Such hearings have been routine on similar projects and are critical to public participation. It's outrageous that the DEC would restrict public participation and involvement by limiting the public comment period and refusing to schedule hearings. This must be remedied. People need more time to understand and weigh in about the impacts of this huge project on our communities.

Governor Hochul and the DEC must stop the NESE pipeline. Rejecting this proposal would mean protecting the climate for years to come and helping ensure New York stays habitable. Deny the requested permits now.
