Senators: Block Trump’s Cuts to Food & Water Safety

Trump and his allies in Congress are at it again: pushing to gut essential protections that keep our food and water safe.

Recently, Congressional Republicans passed a short-term spending bill in the House that would allow Trump to make dangerous cuts to essential programs. This bill allows Trump and Congressional Republicans to eliminate essential support for safe water and hamstring the EPA’s ability to help keep our food and water safe through sneaky backdoor maneuvers to gut programs that Congress already funded.

We need our Senators to stand firm against Trump’s toxic agenda by passing a spending bill that funds clean water and safe food, and prevents any partisan clawbacks of already-approved funding.

I urge you to vote no on the House Republican spending bill (H.R.5371) because it fails to protect critical programs from Trump’s dangerous cuts.

I am outraged by efforts to defund food and water safety. You must support annual spending legislation that fully funds safe food and clean water and prohibits partisan rescissions of the funding provided.

You must oppose H.R.5371 because it leaves the door open for partisan rescissions, a sneaky, backdoor process that allows the Trump administration and his allies in Congress to cut this funding later on without any bipartisan support. Trump and congressional Republicans are turning to partisan rescission to slash funding outside of the regular appropriations process. This is not only a threat to clean water but also to all government programs.

This is your one opportunity to protect critical programs. Sen. Murray and Rep. DeLauro have proposed a better short-term funding solution (S.2882) that would protect against partisan rescissions in the FY2026 appropriations legislation. I urge you to support this legislation and ensure that the final appropriations legislation includes this language to prohibit partisan rescissions under the Impoundment Control Act. The appropriations bill requires bipartisan support in the Senate.

I urge you to oppose the House spending bill (H.R.5371) that allows Trump’s extreme cuts, and instead, support legislation like S.2882 that would guarantee funding for safe food and clean water. You must reject any spending bill that leaves the door open for partisan rescissions or slashes core food, water, health, and environmental protections.
