EPA: Keep Lead and PFAS Out of Our Water!

Trump’s EPA is considering whether to roll back critical protections to keep poisonous lead and toxic PFAS forever chemicals out of our water.

The diseases, developmental disorders, and internal damage caused by lead and PFAS in our water is preventable, and together we’ve worked hard to win these commonsense protections that keep our communities safe. We refuse to go back.

I urge you to maintain critical protections that keep communities safe by defending in court and upholding (1) the maximum contaminant levels for six forms of PFAS, (2) the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, and (3) designation of PFOA and PFOS as hazardous substances under CERCLA to help hold PFAS polluters accountable to clean up contaminated water.

Toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” don’t readily break down on their own in the environment. They leach into our food, water, ecosystems, and even our bodies, causing numerous health issues. PFAS exposure has been linked to low birth weight, cancer, and other harmful illnesses.

The manufacturers of these toxic chemicals knew for decades the harm they cause; it's way past time they are held accountable. The science is clear: PFAS pose a serious danger, and the entire class must be regulated!

The historic Lead and Copper Rule Improvements strengthen protections against lead in drinking water by requiring full lead service line replacement in a decade for most communities. This rule also lowers the action level from 15 ppb to 10 ppb, protecting millions of people from lead exposure from their drinking water.

There is no safe level of lead in drinking water, and it is especially dangerous for children. It can lead to developmental disorders, damage to the nervous system and blood cells, and more.

The Environmental Protection Agency should protect communities from these toxic substances in our water, not roll back important progress we’ve made toward safe water for our families. The diseases, developmental disorders, and internal damage caused by this pollution is preventable.

Please do your job as EPA Administrator and defend in court the limits on PFAS in drinking water, the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements and designation of PFOA and PFOS as hazardous substances under CERCLA to help hold PFAS polluters accountable to clean up contaminated water.
