MD Legislators: Reject the Next Generation Energy Act!

Soon Maryland lawmakers may vote on a bill to fast-track the buildout of dangerous fracked gas plants and nuclear reactors in our state. The Next Generation Energy Act would also strip away important environmental justice protections. We can’t let that happen!

Legislators are so intent on building these dirty energy facilities, they plan to eliminate key community protections during the application process for new gas and nuclear plants. Guidelines for notifying and engaging communities, environmental reviews, and health assessment studies would no longer be required.

Urge your legislators to reject the Next Generation Energy Act and oppose losing important environmental justice protections so that new power plants can be fast-tracked.

I urge you to vote against the Next Generation Energy Act (SB0937/HB1035). At a time when electricity bills keep going up, this bill promotes the buildout of expensive new methane gas plants and nuclear reactors. Worse, the bill weakens important protections for Maryland communities where these dangerous new facilities would be located. In fact, the Next Generation Energy Act has language which would exempt these plants from certain Maryland regulations pertaining to ensuring evironmental justice and keeping our communities safe.

Right now, gas and nuclear companies are required to engage affected communities by notifying them of their intentions to build a plant. They are also required to consult with the local government to review possible environmental risks. These requirements are vital in ensuring gas and nuclear companies are accountable to the people and local governments that will be affected by their operations.

We must ensure that the communities where these plants may operate in are properly informed about toxic and hazardous materials being brought into their neighborhoods, as well as the pollution that these power plants would emit. But the Next Generation Energy Act eliminates all these protections!

I urge you to say NO to SB0937/HB1035. Maryland should be investing in clean, affordable energy options, not fast-tracking dirty energy options that will endanger communities.
