Congress: Don’t Defund Safe Food and Clean Water

Under the Musk-Trump agenda, Congressional Republicans want to slash the budget for essential government functions with inhumane cuts to nutrition assistance, school lunches, local water projects and more – all to pay for tax cuts for corporations and billionaires.

Cuts to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, school lunches and local water financing are on the table. These cuts would result in more illnesses, deaths, and hardship for Americans.

Tell Congress: Don’t Defund Safe Food and Clean Water!

As your constituent, I urge you to do everything in your power to block the extreme budget cuts that endanger safe food and clean water.

The House has passed a budget reconciliation resolution (H.Con.Res. 14) that directs major cuts to basic services, such as Medicaid and SNAP food assistance, to help pay for $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, largely for billionaires and corporations.

As Congress uses this resolution to develop the details of the budget bill, I urge you to fight against the dangerous cuts that jeopardize access to safe food and water for millions of people:

Oppose any cuts to SNAP, school lunches, and other food assistance and safety programs:

The House Agriculture Committee is directed to cut $230 billion, with much of it likely from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. SNAP benefits help feed more than 40 million low-income people in the United States every year, providing an average of just $212 a month per person for food.  In addition, the House Education and Workforce Committee is directed to cut $330 billion from programs under its purview, including school lunches and more.

At a time when food prices continue to soar, do not raze to ground programs designed to fight hunger for struggling families and children.

Oppose any cuts to funding for clean water:

The House Ways & Means Committee has also proposed removing the tax exemption on municipal bonds as a potential way to pay for additional tax cuts for wealthy individuals and corporations. About 90 percent of water projects are financed using local government borrowing, and removing the tax exemption on general obligation and revenue bonds would devastate local governments’ ability to finance water projects.

Any cuts to water funding and financing will also lead to significant increases in local water prices. Water bills are already unaffordable for as many as one in three households.

Our country cannot afford budget cuts that erode access to safe food and clean water. I urge you to oppose any budget bill with these extreme cuts that put safe food and clean water at risk.
