As your constituent, I urge you to do everything in your power to block the extreme budget cuts that endanger safe food and clean water.

The budget reconciliation bill (HR 1) passed in the House directs major cuts to basic services, such as Medicaid and SNAP food assistance, to help pay for $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, largely for billionaires and corporations.

I urge you to fight against the dangerous cuts to SNAP and other food assistance and safety programs: The House budget reconciliation bill would cut $300 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. SNAP benefits help feed more than 40 million low-income people in the United States every year, providing an average of just $212 a month per person for food. According to the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, nearly 11 million people, including more than 4 million children, could lose access to some food assistance under the House budget bill.

At a time when food prices continue to soar, do not raze to the ground programs designed to fight hunger for struggling families and children.

HR 1 would also fast track fossil fuel projects by allowing pipeline companies the option to pay to have their projects approved more quickly. The bill would allow pipeline companies to “elect” to fast-track federally required permitting, by making a one time payment of the lower of $10 million or 1% of a project’s cost, forcing completion of all federally required permits within one year unless extended to 18 months, at the request of the project developer. If the administration or state agencies fail to issue a federally required determination during that timeline, their permits would be automatically granted.

I urge you to fight to remove any language that fast tracks permitting for dirty fossil fuel projects.

Our country cannot afford budget cuts that erode access to safe food. I urge you to oppose any budget bill with extreme cuts that put safe food or clean water at risk.
