STOP the Bill to Shut Down Nonprofits!

We must stop a dangerous bill moving through Congress that would allow the Trump Administration to shut down organizations that disagree with him – like Food & Water Watch.

This bill, S4136, would allow the Treasury Secretary under the Trump Administration to silence organizations by revoking their tax-exempt status with little oversight. This could have a chilling effect, stripping funding for organizations that oppose Trump, whose voices will be more important than ever over the next four years.

I urge you to oppose S.4136, which was amended to H.R. 9495, “Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act,” and passed the House largely along party lines. This could be attached to a year-end spending bill, and we need you to make sure Senator Schumer keeps it out.
 
This bill gives the Treasury Secretary under the Trump Administration and future administrations the power to revoke the tax-exempt status of any nonprofit organization accused of supporting terrorism, even if there's no clear proof or legal case. This would allow the Trump Administration to silence organizations that oppose his agenda. Compounding these concerns are Trump’s cabinet appointments who lack real expertise in the agencies they could oversee, and are poised to carry out Trump’s agenda to slash institutions who are charged with protecting public health and the environment.
 
This bill could have a chilling effect on the entire nonprofit sector. It could discourage nonprofits from tackling controversial topics, particularly in regions where political tensions are high. The potential for being unfairly targeted could silence many groups that provide critical support to vulnerable communities.

H.R. 9495 is a dangerous bill that gives the executive branch too much authority to revoke a nonprofit's tax-exempt status based on accusations or political designations. This could have serious consequences for the organizations we all rely on to make the world a better place.
