Gov. Murphy: Ban Fracked Gas Exports!

New Fortress Energy wants to build a massive export terminal in Gibbstown, Gloucester County to ship Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) overseas. This plan would involve shipping highly volatile LNG via trucks hundreds of miles through our state — and endangering communities throughout South Jersey.

Urge Gov. Murphy and state regulators to stop the Gibbstown export terminal and ban LNG exports in New Jersey!

If an LNG tanker truck crashed on I-95, it could cause a catastrophic explosion, pollute our air and water, and endanger people's health for miles around. What's more, the Gibbstown terminal would keep us dependent on fossil fuels for decades to come. As long as LNG exports are allowed in New Jersey, our safety is at risk.

I urge you to take action to protect New Jersey communities from the dangers of shipping liquefied natural gas (LNG) through our state, including to the proposed Gibbstown LNG terminal. Please act on your environmental justice commitments by stopping the Gibbstown LNG export terminal and enacting a complete ban on LNG export terminals in New Jersey.

For years, communities across South Jersey have been threatened by New Fortress Energy's proposed export facility in Gibbstown. LNG is a highly explosive form of gas that could cause catastrophic accidents, pollute our air and water, and keep us dependent on fossil fuels for decades to come. An accident involving LNG shipments could cause a disaster more catastrophic than the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, and could severely damage New Jersey's fragile coastal ecosystem and pollute air and water for entire towns.

The New Jersey Coastal Area Facilities Review Act (CAFRA) states: “it is in the interest of the people of the State that all of the coastal area should be dedicated to those kinds of land uses which promote the public health, safety and welfare.” We must uphold these critical protections by preventing our coastal economies, waterbodies, and communities from being sacrificed for fossil fuel profits.

The Gibbstown project could be only the first of many LNG export/import projects proposed in our state. As long as LNG exports are allowed in New Jersey, our safety and environment are at risk.

Furthermore, we need a rapid transition off fossil fuels to avoid the most devastating consequences of climate change. Allowing new LNG infrastructure to be built in the state would be a huge step in the wrong direction.

You have stated your opposition to the transportation and storage of LNG and cited concerns with the "safety and public health risks" of the Gibbstown project. Please act on this opposition now.

Governor Murphy, please direct your Department of Environmental Protection to adopt a comprehensive rule that bans LNG import and export terminals in New Jersey.
