Protect California's Water

California is running out of water fast. While Big Oil and Big Ag corporations guzzle up our precious, finite water resources, more than one million Californians lack access to safe drinking water.

Our elected leaders must enact new water policies for the state that deliver on the promise that Californians deserve clean, reliable water. We must stop the expansion of the damaging industries using the most water and limit their water use. We need Governor Newsom to step up to the challenge and use his executive authority to protect California’s water!

I urge you to use your executive authority to take bold action to rein in corporate water abuse and protect California’s water.

Despite recent storms and flooding, California is mired in a climate change-fueled, long-term water crisis and drought, leading to water shortages that pose a direct threat to California residents and the natural environment. These water shortages are being driven by large corporate interests who profit while poisoning our environment.

While punctuated by periodic wet years, California is experiencing the driest 22-year period in more than 1,200 years. Fossil fuel-driven climate change is accelerating this trend. At the same time, some of the industries most responsible for driving climate change are growing and continuing to use vast quantities of water, polluting fresh water that could be used for people’s basic needs.

Expanded nut crop acres required more than 520 billion gallons more water in 2021 than just four years prior. Alfalfa irrigation guzzles around 945 billion gallons of water per year. And mega-dairies use more than 142 million gallons per day. Meanwhile, climate-polluting oil and gas operators devoured 3 billion gallons of freshwater between 2018 and 2021.

Water management and rights systems that give deference to corporations have allowed billions of gallons of California’s water to be exported overseas in the form of water-intensive products like almonds, alfalfa, and dairy. All while communities - largely those already burdened with environmental injustices -  are being denied the human right to water as thousands of wells are running dry across the state.

I call on you to do the following:

1) Use your executive and emergency powers to immediately stop egregious misuses of California water. This includes a) preventing the new large-scale planting of almonds and alfalfa, b) banning new mega-dairies and factory farms, and c) ending new oil and gas drilling.

2) Reject corporate-backed industrial projects like costly desalination facilities, the proposed Delta Conveyance Project, and wastewater recycling. Instead, promote equitable and climate-friendly water solutions.

Please use your authority to help protect California’s water from misuse and exploitation, for the benefit of Californians and the environment.
