New York City Council: Defend Local Law 97!

Local Law 97 is New York City's Green New Deal for buildings. Passed in 2019, this nation-leading climate law is fulfilling its potential to cut energy bills, create jobs, and slash air pollution while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Unfortunately, the law is facing a well-financed attack by the real estate industry.

A dangerous threat is a proposed bill, Intro 772, which would gut Local Law 97. We need City Council members to reject Intro 772 and stand with the people, not the polluters, by supporting full, effective, and timely inforcement of Local Law 97.

Local Law 97 is the nation's leading climate and jobs law. It is fulfilling its potential to create jobs, reduce air pollution, and cut energy bills, while helping New York meets its urgent climate goals.

Unfortunately, Local Law 97 is facing a well-funded attack by the real estate industry, which is bankrolling a campaign of disinformation to protect their financial interests.

Intro 772 poses a dangerous threat to Local Law 97 through two provisions:

First, any building with lawns, shrubs, trees, or other open green space could include this square footage in the calculations of the building’s pollution per square foot. This is clearly bad policy, evading the law’s intent and goals, both because this green space is not part of the building and it does not reduce its pollution.

Second, the bill exempts coops and condos with a property tax valuation of $65,000 or less per unit by eliminating penalties for breaking the law. The plain reality is that this provision would make obeying the law optional. It would just be another housing law that is not enforced and which building owners know they can safely ignore.

Please stand with the people, not the polluters. Defend Local Law 97, New York City's Green New Deal for buildings. Reject Intro 772, which would gut New York City's nation-leading jobs and climate law.
