Congress: Support the WATER Act!

Water bills are skyrocketing across the country, growing faster than inflation and household incomes. At the same time, water funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law just ran out in September when Congress failed to renew it.

To prevent a deepening water affordability crisis, we need Congress to extend, expand, and safeguard federal support for safe water. Congress members must restore federal funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and pass the WATER Act to fully fund water and sewage system repairs, create good jobs for over 1 million people, help stop sewage overflows, and make infrastructure fixes each year.

I urge you to restore federal funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and co-sponsor and pass the Water Affordability, Transparency, Equity, and Reliability (WATER) Act (H.R.3376 and S.1730), introduced by Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, Congressman Ro Khanna, and Senator Bernie Sanders.

Across the country, household water costs have jumped 62 percent over the last decade, outpacing inflation, groceries, and household incomes. These costs are driven by aging systems, corporate water abuses, and climate change. Households are grappling with water bills stretching their ability to keep up.

But federal support from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law just ran out at the end of September.  Since the 1970s, the federal government has slashed funding for water infrastructure upgrades, putting the health of entire communities in danger, with children being especially vulnerable.

Affordable access to safe drinking water is non-negotiable. It's a human right. People shouldn't have to worry about whether their water is safe to drink or if they will have reliable service.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s latest estimates are that at least $1.3 trillion is needed to upgrade our drinking water and wastewater systems over the next 20 years. Nothing short of renewed federal investment in our nation's water systems is going to help meet this challenge.

The long-term solution is the Water Affordability, Transparency, Equity, and Reliability (WATER) Act. This legislation would restore the federal government's commitment to our nation’s water infrastructure by providing a long-term, sustainable source of funding for safe, clean water. It also provides funding so that states, localities, and households can take real action to get per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS "forever chemicals"), lead, and other toxic substances out of drinking water.

Please restore water funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and then co-sponsor and work to pass the WATER Act (H.R.3376 and S.1730). Everyone deserves affordable access to clean, safe water.
