Congress: It's Time to Ban Artificial Superintelligence!

The AI industry is out of control, with top AI scientists saying AI has a greater-than-10 % chance of wiping out humanity.

We need to prevent artificial superintelligence and put the brakes on advanced AI until sufficient safety mechanisms are established. Senator Sanders and Representative Greg Casar have introduced legislation to do just that — the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act.

I urge you to support the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act, to be introduced soon by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar.

The AI industry is out of control. Last week Athropic’s Alignment Science Lead went to twitter to say that AI has a greater than 10% chance of destroying humanity. Open AI CEO Sam Altman said “we could lose control of the future to AI;” and Athropic CEO Dario Amodei said “I don't think I fully just appreciated what it would actually be like when the progress was as fast as it was.”

These are the exact same people who have been recklessly pushing for the rapid development of AI, ruining communities and our environment with dirty AI data centers, and working overtime to stop laws to rein in this out of control industry.

The Ban Artificial Superintelligence bill will do what should have been done long ago. Create a regulatory framework and assert control over the AI industry to protect humanity.

The Sanders/Casar bill would:

– Ban AI superintelligence - prevents the development of systems that can exhibit capabilities that match or exceed human cognitive performance or have sufficient capabilities to plan and execute the disempowerment of humanity. 
– Pause advanced AI development until a new, federal AI regulatory body is up and running and has established clear rules and model review processes to ensure safe and secure development and deployment of AI.
– Establish a new cabinet-level federal agency to monitor AI systems, oversee the removal of dangerous capabilities, and supervise the destruction of artificial superintelligence

It’s time for Congress to step in, regulate  Big Tech and protect all people from out-of-control AI.
