Tell the California Senate: No More Handouts for Big Oil!

Big Oil is spending tens of millions every year lobbying Sacramento, and now they're pushing two bills in the state legislature.

AB 2711 attacks environmental review for oil and gas wells statewide. Big Oil lobbyists want to take Kern County's drilling free-for-all and bring it to Los Angeles, the Central Coast, and communities across California, with fewer safeguards and less public scrutiny.

AB 2716 would weaken the rules that require oil companies to pay for cleanup when they abandon their wells, leaving taxpayers to cover the cost of the leaking infrastructure, contaminated soil, and poisoned groundwater they leave behind.

I'm writing to urge you to OPPOSE AB 2711 and AB 2716. These two bills would hand even more power and profit to the oil industry at the expense of California's communities and taxpayers.

AB 2711 would weaken environmental review for oil and gas wells statewide, opening the door to expanded drilling across California, including in Los Angeles and the Central Coast, with fewer safeguards and less public scrutiny. This is not a minor procedural change. It is an attempt to bring an oil drilling free-for-all to communities across the state.

AB 2716 would weaken the rules that require oil companies to pay for cleanup when they abandon their wells. Oil companies have already walked away from wells across the state, leaving behind leaking infrastructure, contaminated soil, and poisoned groundwater in their wake. This bill would weaken the state’s orphan well protections and leave taxpayers at risk of footing even more of the bill.

California has fought hard to protect frontline communities and taxpayers from the health harms and financial risks of fossil fuel extraction. These oil industry handout bills would move us in the wrong direction.

I urge you to strongly OPPOSE AB 2711 and AB 2716, and to vote NO on both bills if they reach the floor.
