Say NO to Data Centers: Enact a Moratorium Now!

All over Maryland, people are concerned about the encroachment of data centers. With energy prices rising and our drinking water at risk, we cannot allow data centers to have free rein over vital resources. Many counties have already passed data center moratoriums but we need the state to take action!

The Maryland General Assembly could soon be voting on legislation that would put a moratorium on data centers all over the state. This would help ensure data centers are not given unrestricted access to our land, water, and electricity.

I urge you to enact a statewide moratorium on permits for data centers because they would consume valuable water, raise energy prices, and could be used to bring more power plants into the state!

Data centers require a massive amount of water for cooling purposes. Proposed data centers in parts of Maryland could potentially drain 2 million gallons of water from the beautiful Potomac River every day. Maryland residents should not have to compete with data centers for drinking water.

Furthermore, data centers require a massive amount of energy. By 2028, data centers could be using as much energy as 28 million households nationally. As data centers demand more and more power, Maryland residents have seen electricity bills skyrocket. Allowing the buildout of data centers means increasing the burden on families that are just trying to pay their bills.

Lastly, gas and nuclear power plants are being proposed as a way of meeting data center energy needs. Constructing expensive gas and nuclear plants would be harmful for people's health and the environment. Big Tech should not be allowed to provide a lifeline to the dirty energy industry.

By placing a  moratorium on data centers in Maryland, we would be helping to prevent the buildout of data centers in our backyards until lawmakers understand the full impacts these facilities would have on state residents.
